“Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not preparation for life but is life itself.”

- John Dewey

The Troupe is staffed with a veteran HPS teacher as well as an instructional aide. Current enrollment in the Troupe is capped at 10 students. Troupe students receive individualized and group instruction in all core academic areas within their self-contained classroom. The curriculum meets state and federal standards. Middle school students participate yearly in the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessments. Eighth graders also take the ASK 8 Science assessment in the spring.

Troupe students benefit from our behavior management status board which is a visual aide to remind them of the standing of their privileges. There is also a study skills checklist that focuses on organizational skills, homework and classroom behavior over a time period of two weeks.  Troupe students assess themselves daily at their end of the day homeroom meeting as another method of promoting self-regulation, academic motivation and homeroom team building.

The Troupe programming provides for group counseling three times a week for forty minutes.  “Group” is a forum for learning the communication tools students need to communicate effectively and respectfully, resolving conflicts in a socially acceptable manner, giving and receiving feedback and support, and learning to identify emotions as a way to change negative social responses to positive ones.

Troupe students are integrated with HPS high school students for afternoon electives. This combined structure allows our older students to mentor our younger students as they prepare to move from the middle school environment to the bigger academic and social demands of the high school environment.
