ART STUDIO

The Art Studio elective provides students with the opportunity to develop their artistic skills while exploring the medium or style that interests them most. Students may focus on disciplines such as drawing, painting, cartooning, landscape, fashion illustration, or still life, while also experimenting with media including wood burning, clay, mosaics, printmaking, and canvas painting. With guidance and studio time, students learn to plan and complete original projects, care for art materials, and refine their creative techniques. The course also supports students who wish to begin building a personal art portfolio.

The art room is where magic happens, and mistakes turn into happy accidents in the blink of an eye. Whether it's the creation of "senior selfies", wooden block face sculptures, or hand-printed quilt blocks, it's a place where happiness resides at HPS.

VOCAL LAB

Vocal Lab adds another component to our musical repertoire. This class works with students interested in broadening their musical experience through vocal training. Students in the class support each other as they explore and develop their capabilities. This elective has inspired a regularly scheduled "Vocal Showcase" where our vocalists can share their talents with other community members. 

CHESS

In this engaging elective, students learn the timeless game of chess while building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Players of all levels explore how the pieces move, practice common strategies and tactics, and learn how to plan strong openings, middle-game attacks, and endgames. Through puzzles, friendly matches, and tournaments, students develop focus, patience, and confidence while enjoying the challenge and excitement of this classic game.

SOCIOLOGY

Sociology introduces students to the study of society, exploring how social structures, institutions, and cultural forces shape individual and group behavior. Students examine the foundational theories of the “founding fathers” of sociology while applying sociological principles to everyday life. Topics include social stratification, class, mobility, identity, religion, law, and deviance, as well as early sociological experiments. The course also highlights the wide range of career opportunities in the field, helping students understand how sociology informs personal decisions, social interactions, and broader community dynamics.

CRAFTS

The Crafts elective gives students the opportunity to express their creativity through hands-on craft projects. Students create a variety of items such as decoupage candleholders, bracelets, and fused bead designs while learning to follow directions, use tools responsibly, and develop fine motor skills. Many projects also focus on service, as students create handmade items such as blankets to donate to local charities. Through these activities, students build creativity, craftsmanship, and a sense of contribution to both the school and the broader community.

CERAMICS

Ceramics introduces students to the art and craft of working with clay, guiding them through the full process from shaping to firing. Students complete a variety of projects, including pinch pots, slab constructions, and coil vessels, while learning to handle tools properly and care for their materials. The course also teaches essential ceramic concepts such as greenware, bisque ware, glazing, and proper storage. Through hands-on exploration, students develop creativity, technical skill, and an appreciation for the artistry involved in working with clay.

FILM EDITING

The Film Editing elective introduces students to the art and technique of film editing and the vital role editors play in shaping a story. Students learn to use professional editing software while exploring how pacing, rhythm, sound, and visual effects influence the mood and impact of a film. Through hands-on projects and collaborative work, students develop technical skills in video editing, color correction, and sound design. The course culminates in the creation and presentation of a short edited film that showcases each student’s creativity and storytelling ability.

FILM MAKING

This elective introduces students to the creative and technical process of making films. Students explore the fundamentals of storytelling while learning key production skills such as camera work, lighting, sound, directing, and editing. Through hands-on projects and collaborative work, students gain experience planning, filming, and producing original content. The course culminates in the creation and screening of a student-produced short film that showcases each student’s creativity and teamwork.

MYTHOLOGY

This elective explores the myths and legends that have shaped cultures around the world. Students study stories from Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Asian, and Indigenous traditions while examining the heroes, gods, and archetypes that appear across mythological traditions. Through discussion, creative projects, and comparative analysis, students explore how myths explain the world, express cultural values, and influence modern storytelling. The course culminates in a creative project in which students craft their own myth or modern retelling inspired by the traditions they have studied.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Community Service gives students the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the school and local community while developing responsibility, cooperation, and pride in their efforts. Through hands-on projects and group activities, students strengthen social skills, problem-solving abilities, and work habits such as dependability, teamwork, and follow-through. By participating in service initiatives and seeing the positive impact of their work, students experience personal, social, and emotional growth while building a sense of belonging and accomplishment.

MUSIC LAB

Music Lab offers students a hands-on introduction to making and performing music. Students learn the basics of instruments such as drums, bass, and guitar while exploring a wide range of musical styles including classical, rock, blues, folk, country, and jazz. Through individual practice, ensemble playing, and opportunities for digital recording, students develop foundational music theory, rhythm, and performance skills. As students progress, they build confidence playing with others and gain an appreciation for music as a powerful form of self-expression and a rewarding lifelong pursuit.

PERFORMING ARTS

Performing Arts gives students the opportunity to express themselves through live and recorded performances, including plays, musicals, and film projects. Students participate at their own comfort level through acting, singing, set design, lighting, sound, and other production roles. The course emphasizes collaboration, creativity, and personal growth, culminating in a live performance of a classic Winter Holiday play for the school community. Through these experiences, students build self-confidence, teamwork skills, and an appreciation for the creative process in the performing arts.

YEARBOOK

Yearbook offers students a hands-on opportunity to produce the school’s yearbook while developing skills in journalism, photography, graphic design, and teamwork. Students learn to plan, write, edit, and design a professional-quality yearbook that reflects the culture, events, and achievements of the school year. The course emphasizes collaboration, leadership, and creativity, as students work together to create a product that will be cherished by the school community. Through their work, students gain experience in visual storytelling, layout design, photojournalism, and project management, while learning to meet deadlines, communicate effectively, and contribute to a shared vision.

PERSONAL FINANCE

Personal Finance equips students with practical math skills and real-world money management strategies. Students learn to handle everyday financial tasks such as budgeting, calculating sales and tips, comparing product costs, and managing grocery and shopping expenses. The course also covers writing checks, using debit and credit cards, and making informed financial decisions. Designed to strengthen both basic and applied math skills, Personal Finance prepares students to navigate real-life monetary situations with confidence and independence.

INDEPENDENT LIVING

This popular elective teaches students the practical tools needed to manage daily life and take care of themselves confidently. Through hands-on cooking and meal preparation, students learn kitchen safety, nutrition, healthy eating habits, and basic cooking techniques using a variety of appliances and tools. The course also covers budgeting, using coupons, and making cost-effective food choices, as well as mealtime etiquette and cooperative group work. By practicing these skills, students gain confidence, self-sufficiency, and preparation for both independent living and future employment in the food industry.

BOOK CLUB

Book Club provides a student-centered environment where students explore a variety of reading genres while developing a lifelong appreciation for literature. Through independent reading, literature circles, and guided discussions, students analyze themes, characters, and the author’s purpose while making personal and real-world connections to texts. Emphasizing student choice and collaboration, the course encourages thoughtful conversation, critical thinking, and respectful sharing of diverse perspectives. Students strengthen reading comprehension, communication skills, and confidence as they reflect on their reading experiences. Book Club is an elective that meets in the HPS library. Students who choose Book Club as an elective are usually our avid readers. 

CREATIVE WRITING

This half-year elective encourages students to develop their voice and creativity through a variety of writing experiences. Students explore genres such as personal narrative, short fiction, and poetry while learning the core elements of storytelling, including character, setting, conflict, and theme. Through guided exercises, peer workshops, and revision, students strengthen their writing skills and confidence. The course culminates in a creative writing portfolio that highlights each student’s growth and best work.

STRATEGY & COMPETITION

Strategy and Competition engages students in a variety of games and interactive activities that promote critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership. Through individual and group challenges, students learn to apply offensive, defensive, and cooperative strategies while practicing good sportsmanship, responsibility, and respectful communication. The course emphasizes both winning with humility and accepting setbacks gracefully, helping students develop resilience, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in leadership and supportive roles. These experiences provide skills and strategies that extend beyond the classroom into everyday life.

PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy invites students to explore the ideas and questions that shape the way we understand the world and ourselves. Students examine major themes in Western philosophy, ethical and moral issues, and the influence of philosophical thought on belief systems and society. The course emphasizes critical thinking and logical analysis, giving students the tools to evaluate arguments, consider opposing viewpoints, and engage thoughtfully with complex issues. Through discussion, reflection, and applied reasoning, students develop skills in communication, problem-solving, and informed decision-making that extend beyond the classroom.

MODELS & DESIGN

The Models and Design elective engages hands-on, project-based learners in creative construction and engineering challenges. Students build and detail a variety of plastic models while learning to follow technical instructions, care for materials, and refine their craftsmanship and attention to detail. The course also explores the design, construction, and launching of model rockets, culminating in opportunities to participate in national competitions. Through these projects, students develop precision, problem-solving skills, and a sense of pride in bringing a project from concept to completion.

LEGO

This elective encourages students to explore creativity, problem-solving, and engineering through hands-on building and digital design. Using free-build projects and computer software, students work individually and collaboratively to plan, construct, and complete imaginative designs. The course develops fine motor skills, critical thinking, and analytical reasoning while introducing new vocabulary and practical math applications. Students also document their work in a picture book, showcasing their projects and the skills they’ve developed along the way.

Through a variety of physical education options Hunterdon Prep students learn the importance of a lifelong commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and proper nutrition. Physical education classes focus both on the individual’s development and the development of the interrelationships found on teams. Many of our students struggle with regular education physical education classes. Our physical education classes are designed around what our students like to do and what they see themselves as being successful at. Physical Education/Health electives meet twice a week for 80 minutes. Health classes take place during the second and third marking periods.

BOWLING ...

A student and staff favorite, students travel to a local bowling alley where they learn the fundamentals of this popular sport. Students learn ball selection, approach, and release techniques, and are encouraged to support one another while improving performance in a fun and cooperative environment.

BASKETBALL ...

Basketball focuses on individual skill development and team play. Students practice dribbling, passing, shooting, and strategy while building cooperation, sportsmanship, and cardiovascular fitness through drills and game situations.

FISHING ...

Fishing provides instruction in freshwater angling techniques, equipment use, and safety. Students learn casting methods, bait selection, and environmental responsibility while developing independence and respect for wildlife and natural habitats.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION ...

Taking advantage of our proximity to Round Valley Reservoir, the Columbia Trail, and the parks and paths of the Hunterdon County Parks, this elective offers hands-on experiences in natural settings through activities such as hiking and exploring different terrains. Students build endurance, teamwork, and environmental awareness while learning outdoor safety, navigation, and stewardship.

POWER WALKING ...

Power Walking promotes cardiovascular fitness through structured, low-impact exercise. Students learn proper walking techniques, pacing, and conditioning strategies while improving stamina, flexibility, and overall health.

RECESS GAMES ... 

Bocce, Capture the Flag, Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, Four Square, Wiffleball, Hackey Sack, and Monarchs and Anarchists are some of the outdoor games enjoyed by students who choose this elective. At the beginning of every class, students stretch their muscles with a one-mile walk. The course emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and fitness while students participate in games that build agility, balance, and social interaction.

SOCCER ...

Soccer develops fundamental skills and team strategies. Students practice passing, shooting, and positioning while participating in drills and games that enhance teamwork, fitness, and sportsmanship.

SOFTBALL ...

Softball teaches essential skills, including throwing, catching, batting, and fielding. Students learn rules, strategies, and teamwork while participating in drills and game play that build coordination and endurance.

WEIGHTS ...

The Weights elective focuses on strength training and personal fitness goals. Students learn proper use of equipment, develop individualized workout plans, and understand the relationship between exercise, nutrition, and overall health. Students in this elective use the gym at our local YMCA.

YOGA ...

Yoga promotes flexibility, balance, and relaxation through guided poses, breathing techniques, and meditation. Students develop self-awareness and stress management skills while building physical and emotional well-being.

PUPPY PROJECT ... 

The Puppy Project introduces students to service and therapy dog training. Through hands-on experiences, students learn dog behavior, basic training techniques, and the important role service animals play in supporting individuals with diverse needs.

VOLLEYBALL ...

Volleyball focuses on fundamental skills such as passing, serving, and teamwork. Students participate in drills and structured games designed to improve coordination, communication, and sportsmanship.
