student internship program

At the Hunterdon Preparatory School we are committed to equipping our students with the skills to be productive, contributing members of society. We enrich our academic and extracurricular programs with additional experiences that help prepare our students for life after graduation. One component of this preparation is our integrated Student Internship Program.

Internships are available to students in their senior year of high school and to students in our 12+ Program. The goal of the Student Internship Program is to mentor students in the job preparation process and to provide supervised, on-the-job learning experiences that offer the chance to explore career interests and develop life skills.

Structured Learning Experience (SLE) coordinators at Hunterdon Prep work with the local community to identify workplace opportunities for students. They also serve as mentors for students in the Internship Program. As part of the senior Transitions class students experience the application, interview and hiring processes that are part of joining the workforce. During the year students spend time discussing their job performance with the SLE coordinator as they practice how to communicate effectively with their employers. The ongoing mentoring process helps our students build confidence and offers many additional practical life skills including good communication techniques, appropriate work attire and responsible work habits. To allow for successful coaching and mentoring, all internships take place during regular school hours and transportation is provided by Hunterdon Prep.

The success of the internship program is an example of the high level of collaboration between students, parents, instructors, and counselors at HPS. In some cases, individual internships have been so successful that students have been offered employment after graduation. While this is not the goal for all students and is not something that all businesses are able to offer it is an example of the possible outcome.
