Summer Discovery Update

May 27, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones in good health.  As some of Governor Murphy’s lockdown restrictions cautiously begin to ease, we are beginning to imagine what the coming months may look like and what planning will be required for an eventual re-opening of NJ’s schools.

As of today, we have not reached a point where gatherings of more than twenty-five people in an outdoor space are compliant with the Governor’s executive order. For this and other health and safety considerations, we have decided that our Summer Discovery Program (SDP) will be presented in a virtual environment.

The SDP staff has been working hard to create a program that will keep students engaged academically and connected to each other socially.  In addition to classes and group counseling, the summer program will also offer a wide variety of enrichment and recreational experiences and activities including:

Project-based learning

Creative writing through Language Arts

STEM (science, technology, English, math) cross-curricular projects

Art theme weeks

Music theme weeks

Poetry Cafe presentations

SDP school-wide activities or virtual field trips every Friday

Afternoon electives including Dungeons and Dragons, virtual outdoor hikes and scavenger hunts, gardening and more

We look forward to presenting what we believe will be a fun and engaging program for our Summer Discovery Program students.

Best regards,

Toby Ray Loyd
 Executive Director
