Our 10th grade students have begun reading “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Dr. Maya Angelou. The study has included historical content that covers Jim Crow, Segregation and the Civil Rights Movement.
As part of a cross-curriculur activity, the students were invited to create a watercolor with the guidance of Susan Bleignier our resident Art Instructor. The rich imagery that Angelou writes with gave our students a great deal of material to work with when they created their illustrations.
The study also includes Angelou’s poetry and the song “Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday which is is a very important song to the Civil Rights movement. The students will be creating their own version of the strange fruit under the guidance of Ms. Geyer and Ms. Bleignier!
