Important graduation requirement for seniors - deadline 4/11/25

Dear Parents/Guardians of Class of 2025,

We are writing to inform you about a new graduation requirement recently enacted by the New Jersey Department of Education under P.L. 2023, c295. This law mandates that all high school seniors must complete a financial aid application, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as a prerequisite for graduation. This is required beginning with students in the Class of 2025. Families must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or submit a FAFSA waiver. The purpose of this requirement is that the state of New Jersey wants to ensure that students have access to federal, state, and institutional financial aid opportunities for post-secondary education.

Understanding financial aid options is crucial for students as they prepare for their future academic and career endeavors. Completing the financial aid application, students gain access to various forms of financial assistance that can make higher education more affordable. Please keep in mind that financial aid is not just limited to 4 year college institution programs but can also be used towards community college, certificate training programs, trade school, and/or vocational training.

If your child does not intend to pursue post-secondary training/education, or if you prefer not to complete the FAFSA for other reasons, you must then submit a FAFSA waiver for exemption. Waiver forms can be requested from your sending school district or by emailing Ms. Evancho, at mevancho@hunterdonprep.org.

Seniors need to either fill out the FAFSA or submit a waiver by April 11, 2025. If submitting a waiver, it should be signed and returned to Ms. Evancho or your sending district Counseling Office by the date above as this will ensure that students are on track with completing necessary graduation requirements and receive their diploma in June.

Thank you for your attention to this new important matter. Together, we can ensure that every student meets this new graduation requirement and is well-prepared for their future. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out or use the links below for further information.
