Every dollar that you give to Hunterdon Prep goes to support students, our school campus and the specially crafted programs that keep Hunterdon Prep on the leading edge. Read about some of the ways that your gifts have been put into action.
A library has the potential to be so much more than a space to house books. A well designed library is a welcoming place for people to read, to study, to gather in small groups for discussion, to ponder a project or a new idea. Thanks to generous gifts from Hunterdon Prep supporters the new library was completed when the 2016 school year began.
In early spring, 2015 a sparsely furnished room towards the back of the school was command central for the planning of the first "Outside the Box" Fundraiser Event. Volunteers met week after week to settle on the date and venue, the entertainment, guest speakers, and to assemble over 100 baskets full of donated items for the silent auction.
With funds made available from the "Outside the Box" event a library was created in the same white walled, nearly empty space. The walls were painted a warm and inviting color, carpeting, book shelves, study carrels, comfortable seating and accessories were added. Books donated from a variety of sources completed the transformation.
We invite you to visit the school to take a look at your gifts in action.
The inspiration for a Hunterdon Prep Community Garden came from the vision of creating an outdoor garden area where produce and vegetables could be grown for use at the school and for sharing with surrounding communities. Students, staff, and community volunteers worked together to plan, design, and build a garden space that will continue to evolve through generations of students who attend Hunterdon Prep.
The creation of a community garden is one important part of a large campus beautification initiative that HPS kicked off this spring.
From the vision came a plan, and from a plan came the generous financial and volunteer support necessary to break ground on making the vision a reality. Hunterdon Prep’s rural campus is an ideal setting for a community garden and for other projects that will add to the balance of the environment and provide students and staff with outdoor spaces to enrich their learning experiences. Medea Landscape Studio surveyed our campus space and created a Landscape Design Plan that students, staff and volunteers will work to execute over the next few years.
In the spring of 2016, we kicked off the project with a day of building, planting, weeding, and mulching. Students and staff worked alongside volunteers from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Medea Landscape Studio, and Mendham Garden Centers to begin building the raised gardens, to plant new beds around the school, and to clean and refresh existing plant beds. Over 100 students and volunteers were involved in the day’s work. There are plans to have the garden seeded and planted in late spring. Since Hunterdon Prep hosts a robust summer program, many students will be on campus over the summer to continue tending to, and harvesting from the garden.
When you visit the school, take a minute to look at the landscape plan displayed in the school entrance area. Future plans call for the creation of additional areas filled with seasonal plants, a footbridge, gazebo, and several walking paths.
