Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman” by Mickie K. (Creative Writing Class)
Maya Angelou was a civil rights activist and a poet, and she excelled tremendously at both. I chose to share her poem “Phenomenal Woman” because I think it shows girls the type of women they should be looking up to and admiring. In a world full of Kardashians, girls need to be reminded that they don’t have to a size 00 to be beautiful. Maya Angelou discusses how people can’t quite put their finger on what is so amazing about her, and she shares that it’s the fact that she has a certain form of grace and confidence that makes her just so incredible. And, as a writer, I look up to the way she is able to delicately string her words together to form something so amazing. I think she’s unequivocally the greatest “Renaissance Woman” of the 21st century and an excellent role model for young girls.
