This week Mr. Fenwick’s middle school social studies class concluded its “Mock Congress” deliberations.
For the past several weeks, our students have been learning how to research, write and present laws of their own creation as a part of our study of the legislative branch of government.
Student senators had to use a basic version of Robert’s Rules of Order in order to present, defend and amend their laws. Students quickly learned not to speak until given permission and to pose statements in the form of questions. The laws that students presented included changing how juries are paid, increasing benefits for veterans, lowering the voting age, and requiring all New Jersey schools to have a therapy dog on staff. Students had to research their proposed laws in order to be ready to defend them, and if appropriate, explain how they would fund their law.
In the end, only three of the seven laws were passed. They now await final approval by Ms. Gurry (who will have a veto stamp if needed)! The students will conclude their study of the legislature by watching and discussing the classic “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”
